The inspiration behind "Wrecked Angles"

Every artist has those moments in the studio when a simple exercise opens up a whole new way of seeing. "Wrecked Angles" is one of those pieces for me—a painting that began as a classroom assignment and evolved into something much more personal and meaningful.

The inspiration for "Wrecked Angles" came from a watercolor painting class I took at the Watercolor Art Society-Houston. The assignment was deceptively simple: explore what happens when you paint overlapping shapes. At first, it sounded straightforward, but as I began layering washes of color, I realized how much depth and complexity could emerge from this basic concept. Each new shape interacted with the ones beneath it, creating unexpected blends, subtle shadows, and vibrant intersections. The process was a lesson in both control and letting go—allowing the water and pigment to mingle, but also making intentional choices about color, shape, and placement.

As I worked, I found myself drawn to the tension between order and chaos. The geometric forms in "Wrecked Angles" are carefully constructed, yet the watercolor medium introduces an element of unpredictability. Some edges are crisp and defined, while others bleed and blur, echoing the way our thoughts and emotions can overlap and influence each other. The palette—soft yellows, pinks, purples, and greens—was chosen to evoke a sense of calm energy, perfect for a space where focus and creativity are equally important.

What I love most about this piece is how it invites the viewer to find their own meaning in the interplay of shapes and colors. For me, "Wrecked Angles" is about finding harmony in complexity—embracing the messiness of the creative process and discovering beauty in the unexpected. It’s a reminder that even when things seem chaotic, there’s always the potential for balance and clarity.

If you’re looking for artwork that brings both inspiration and tranquility to your home office or creative space, I hope "Wrecked Angles" offers a daily reminder of the power of exploration and the joy of discovery. Have you ever found unexpected beauty in a simple exercise or creative challenge? I’d love to hear your stories in the comments below.
